Learn How To Become A Dog Trainer
So you think you want to become a dog trainer. If you want to learn how to become a dog trainer you should also have a passion for dogs of all kinds. As a dog trainer you will not only be working with animals all day, you will also have to work with the owners of the dogs. If you are looking for a profession where you mainly work with animals and your human contact is at a minimum, then you need to look into a different profession. Dog trainers need to train people as well as dogs. Education is very important to becoming a dog trainer. No body is going to send their new puppy to a person that doesn't have any book knowledge or hands on experience. Get your hands on some books about dog training. The local book store will have books there, or have books that they can order for you. Search online to see if there are any seminars in your area or at least in driving distance from you. A seminar is probably the best place for you to get information since you can ask questions after the seminar and get answers from somebody with knowledge in that field. If you find that the seminars are too expensive you can always see if you can find DVDs on the subject of dog training. This way you can learn from the comfort of your own home.
Where can you get hands on experience? Volunteer at the local animal shelter; help out at the veterinarian clinic, volunteer at the local dog show, or offer help for the rescue group. By helping out at the shelter or rescue group you will come across dogs of different breeds and each with a different behavior. This will help prepare you for any type of dog that might want to be trained by you. Since you will have experience with many different temperaments of dogs you will know what type of dogs you will be willing to train and which dogs you will want to reject. Don't feel as if you have to train every dog that comes across your path. If the job will be too difficult for you, then pass it by and explain to the owner that you don't think that you would be able to handle a dog with that type of behavior. Refer the owner of the dog to a different trainer who is more capable of handling such a case as theirs. After you have all the knowledge you need on how to become a dog trainer, you need to think of where you are going to train dogs at. Are you going to have the type of training that is boarding and training? If so, you will need to have an area for where you can keep the dogs, separate, at night and when you're working with each dog individually. You might want to have a school where the owner comes in with the dog at scheduled times throughout the week. Are you going to have a separate building for your training, or are you going to work from home? Keep in mind that as a new trainer you might need to have another job to pay the bills while your name is being made. To help your business be advertised you might want to consider reading a few books on advertising your business. |
