House Training Dogs Is Much Like Potty Training A Toddler

House Training Dogs

Did you ever stop to think that your puppy doesn't know that your carpet or hard wood floors were not made for using the bathroom on? As you are house training dogs it is your responsibility to show them where they can and can't use the bathroom. It is much like potty training a toddler. There is the right way to train a person and a dog to relieve them selves in the proper area. It all takes time and patience on your part.

The first step in house training dogs are to get all the information on the subject that you can get. There are books that you can check out from the local library or purchase from book stores on the subject. Asking your vet for advice and tips is also a good start. Many people like to take advantage of modern technology by searching the topic on the internet. Just be certain that the training that you are reading into doesn't involve disciplining your pets if they have an accident in the home. Remember, it is called an accident because it was not intentional.

Some of the tips that you'll find in the books or online might include the following that are listed below. The first thing that you need to do with your puppy is to watch them to see what their signals are for needing to use the bathroom. When your puppy wakes up from a nap take him or her outside immediately and watch what he does prior to relieving himself. This will help you know when your puppy needs to go, and you can catch him before he actually does go. If you are the kind of person that wants your puppy to use the bathroom in the same area all the time you need to now start training him to do so. When you take your puppy outside you should put your puppy in the area you want him to relieve himself at. Keep him there until he uses the bathroom. You should take your puppy outside, to this area, every 15 minutes while he is awake. Bring him out there immediately after eating and drinking, also.

For nighttime, put your puppy into a crate. Since dogs do not like to soil in their beds they will try as hard as they can to hold their bladder until it's time to go outside. If your puppy wakes up in the middle of the night you must bring him outside and wait for him to do his "business". Waking up in the middle of the night will soon pass, but it is important as a puppy to take him outside to prevent accidents. You can also supply a litter box for your puppy if you don't intend to wake up in the middle of the night with him. If you are a deep sleeper you can set your alarm clock to wake up at certain times to see if your puppy is awake and needing to use the bathroom.

The most important step in house training dogs is to be consistent. After your puppy has done a successful job outside it is imperative to give him his reward. This reward can be a treat or it can be lots of hugs and kisses. A puppy will be thankful for either.
