Entering into the dog training career field is something that a lot of dog lovers want to do. However, they don't think of the fact that they need to also work with people. You are not only training a dog, but a lot of the times you are working with the owner of the dog and training them how to work with their dog. Therefore, you must be a dog lover and a lover of working with people, often times people that know nothing about dogs. So, you must be understanding, patient, and have knowledge in the dog training field. To become a professional dog trainer you don't need a degree. It's probably one of the few jobs that does not require a degree of some sort. A degree will help you, but it is not necessary. You need to have an education so you know what you need to do. Hands on experience is a must. You need to learn all you can about the canine species in order to understand them completely. You can find books at the local book store, online, or at the library to help you gain the knowledge that you need. Do research online. The internet is filled with useful information. Seminars are held on dog training that you can attend. A seminar might be the most useful tool since you can ask questions and get answers from somebody who has been in your position before.
When you are first starting out in the dog training career field you will most likely need a different job to support you and your family. Jobs that will help you advance in you dog training career include working at the pet store, animal shelter, veterinarian clinic, and rescue center. This will give you experience in working with many different breeds of dogs. And you will come to find out that each dog has a different, unique personality. While doing this type of work you will also learn that there are some dogs that just don't agree with you. This experience will help you determine later in life what dogs you will want to train and what dogs you will want to refer to a different trainer that is more capable of training their behavior. Now that you have the knowledge and experience you are ready to open your dog training school. But wait! You don't have a building or a game plan. You need to determine if you are going to have a boarding and training type of dog training career. If you are going to board dogs, you need to have proper housing for them. You cannot leave a dog chained up all night outside; you must have a kennel with heating or cooling, depending on the climate. Food and water must be accessible to the dogs at all times. Or you can have the type of training where the owner brings the dog to you at a specific time each day or week. This way the owner can learn how to work with the dog as well. Make up your business plan and stick to it. It might take some time to become well-known, but if you have a true passion for your dog training career you will eventually become successful. |
